Bravo in Cubic, Patek

We are criticising Patek a lot -- for being 2nd best, a bit lame etc. (see here: *klikk) And because they are strong and can take it. But fairness requires to also point out surprisingly great moves by the top-brand from Geneva -- and the Patek Cubitus (esp. the Tricolore) is such a great move.

Sometimes it is great if you DON'T do what most expect. So, Pateks new line-presentation is already great for NOT making some "cheap" moves that are currently trend:

  • Patek is not joining the late and overstretched asymmetric-watch-hype, that is currently the cheapest trick to gain some attention. But it was an anachronism 12 months ago already.
  • Patek is not joining the stone-dial hype -- another risk-free step and cheap fishing for compliments and attention.

And it presented the new Cubitus as a tricolore: steel-case with characteristic golden accents (imo the best for Nautilus, Cubitus) and a highly contrasting dial. Beautiful and a bit vintage but I am quite sure it will not only become their most-sought after model but also could be the ignition of a trend toward bi- & tricolor-watches.

One word to people comparing the Cubitus to Santos Cartier or any other rectangular-shaped watch: This is non-sense, as the case-concept of the Nautilus is completely different to these others and the ears are necessary to cover the hinge and the screw. Also no one would ever compare the new Biver watch to a IWC Portofino just because both are round.

Instead it clearly stands in the line of Pateks Portfolio: Aquanaut (left, feminine) - Nautilus (center) - Cubitus (right, masculine). And if you read it like that, you might wonder why they didnt present it decades earlier -- a perfect fit.

I think it is a self-defined watch, quite characteristic but of course it is not the world upside down. And no one could expect that from Patek. But it will be a classic in 10y from now and chances are quite good that it will be viewed as the watch that ignited a trend to rectangular watches and another one to bi- / tricolor.

Ad 2024-10-24: And again and maybe more pointed: To compare it to a Cartier Santos or any other rectangular watch is of no value as the shape alone is a weak differentiator as many have the same shape. Instead the color-scheme or the type of case (bezel screwed from front or hinge & screw in ears etc), the movement or the bracelet-type make more sense.

Or let me put it like that: a random duck looks exactly like a duck because they share 99% of the DNA. And when you are not into ducks (like 99% of the people) then the 1% difference is irrelevant to you and "invisible". Now, when you look into Santos & Cubitus and see "the same duck", then there is a reason.
