19th Century Heavy Audemars

Audemars Piguet Early & Heavy Pocket Watch, William Porter

Sold

This heavy Audemars pocket watch was made in 1873 according to our research -- it is numbered 12'XXX.

The case is impressive in size (53mm * 14mm) and weight (120grams) and is definitely a look at the begin of the brand: Audemars & Piguet was founded 1875 and in the years before, the brilliant watchmaker Louis Audemars made watches under his name Louis Audemars and this is engraved on the fine movement: Brassus & Geneve -- Ls Audemars.

All lids are of 18K gold and these and the movement got the same serial number engraved.

Very typical for this era is the fact that the company name was not shown on the dial -- like with this very good preserved timepiece. Many pocket watches from this time have a name re-printed on the dial later on. It seems like this white enamel dial with black roman hour numbers and red printed arabian minute numbers are original.

The case back shows a factory made initial WAP -- probably for the initial owner Mr William A. Porter. The inner dust lid shows a engraving stating "Bequeated to William Porter Hamilton by his Grandfather William A Porter."

Overall, the watch is in adequate and -- given the age -- good condition. The crystal shows a nick at 7 o'clock and the watch has some signs of use here and there. However, please understand our photos are not manipulated but show the true actual state and condition of the items magnified a lot.
